Working from Home with A Dog

Working from home is a way of life for most people nowadays, especially with how Covid-19 has affected our way of life.  If you are new to working from home or have been working from home for quite some time now, the change in routine is an experience which requires progress, not perfection.  As a dog owner, working from home can impact your dog’s daily schedule, which may cause confusion about your availability during work from home hours which may yield distractions.  Believe it or not, dogs thrive in a daily schedule with routines.  Feeding, potty breaks, and social interaction are all important factors to consider.  We want to give you some tips which will ensure that you and your dog will have a happy, healthy work from home experience.

  • Create a separate, dog-free workspace.  Keeping yourself separated from your dog will allow you to be more productive.  Another benefit ensures that your dog isn’t going to distract you during an important conference call or time-crunching deadline.  If your dog comes up to you and nudges you, practice a command such a “place” which teaches them that it’s time for them to go to their designated spot.

  • Set designated play times.  Time management is key!  It is very easy to become distracted, especially if your dog is constantly looking for attention.  Set specific break times for you and your dog.  Perhaps you can play fetch in the morning and take a longer walk around the neighborhood during lunch time.

  • Keep your dog occupied.  We all know that a bored dog gets anxious.  This may cause destruction such as mischief, destruction, or messes!  As a dog owner, you need to be proactive about initiating play time or dog walks.  Be sure to rotate toys so that your four-legged friend never gets bored!

Working from home with a dog will take practice and patience.  As always, consistency and patience will be the keys to success.  Keep in mind that this will be a he change for both you and your pup.  Work together to achieve the best results!
