Unfortunately, dogs get old and may experience dementia, just like humans do.  Have you ever noticed that your elder dog may not know where they are, or they are wandering around the house like they are lost?  These are signs of dog dementia which can cause a lot of anxiety for your dog.  There are many things that can be done to help a dog suffering from dementia.  This article will go into further detail about the signs of dog dementia and the steps to take to help a dog in need.

Dog dementia is also called canine cognitive dysfunction and is very similar to Alzheimer’s in people.  There are not many specific signs to lead you to think that your dog has dementia.  Many of the signs mentioned below can also be due to another disease.

Disorientation – This is one of the most common signs of dementia in dogs.  Dogs usually get lost in their own house and may act confused on where they are going.

Messes – Dogs who have been potty trained for quite some time are now having accidents in the house.

Various Sleep Patterns – A dog who used to sleep through the night may be waking up and pacing instead.

Lower Energy – Dogs who have dementia will not have the energy or desire to play like they used to.

Barking – Dogs suffering from dementia may bark at people they know or wake up in the middle of the night just to bark.

Is your older dog showing any of the signs that were mentioned above?  If so, do not panic.  Making an appointment with your veterinarian is your first step.  Your veterinarian will discuss the different signs of dementia and the various treatment options which can be done.  There are many ways to treat dementia in dogs.  Medication and/or supplements may be prescribed.  In addition, a healthy diet will boost brain function.  As with any neurologic disease, treatment requires care and patients. You must understand that your dog will never get better, but there are many things that you can do to help ease the symptoms. With care and patience, your dog can still live a healthy and happy life.
