Why Your Dog Should Not Ride with Its Head Out of the Car Window

Many dogs love car rides, and what makes it better for them is being able to stick their head out of the window. You may be wondering if this is a good idea or not. The short answer is no; it is not good to allow your dog to put their head out the window of your car. We want to share our list of reasons why this behavior is unsafe.

  • Your dog could lean too far and fall out of the car. Imagine if you were going full speed with the window lowered, and your dog suddenly fell out of the vehicle. This is a fatal accident waiting to happen.
  • Your dog may see something and might jump out of the car to get it. If you are at a stop and your dog sees a squirrel, it may jump out of the car to chase it. This is something you do not want to risk!
  • Your dog may get something in its eye. Even the smallest particle becomes a projectile in a moving car and could cause your dog to lose sight. Think about the damage that rocks, dirt, or bugs can do to your dog’s eyes.
  • Your dog can get sideswiped from another vehicle. You never know what can happen on the road. Other drivers can be unpredictable at times. You do not want your dog to get crushed between two cars.

We hope you understand the dangers of letting your dog put its head out of the window. Instead of allowing them to do this, crack the rear windows slightly so your dog can still enjoy the outdoor breeze and smells. Another tip is to make sure your back windows are locked. Dogs can learn how to lower automatic windows, which can lead to a dangerous situation!
