Training Tip: Not Switching Sides While Walking on the Leash

Have you ever been out on a walk with your dog and suddenly they cross in front of you, almost to cause you to trip?  This can also occur during running!  Not only is it shocking, but if your dog crosses in front of you, it can not only cause danger to you, but the dog as well.  The good thing is that it is easy to teach your dog to stay on one side and to not make any sudden switches.

We recommend that you use a 6-foot leash and a no-pull harness (if your dog pulls).  The first thing that you will need to do is to decide which side your dog should walk on.  A you walk your dog, praise them, and use ques such as “good” or “yes” to let them know that they are doing the right thing.

As soon as your dog starts to cross in front of you, use the leash to prevent them from crossing.  You may even stomp your feet to let them know that you are there.  Use a que such as “bad” or “no” to enforce incorrect behavior.  Persistence and routine are key.  Continue to praise your dog for being on the preferred side.  Do not be afraid to stomp your feet to help teach your dog to stop crossing.  This will make for much pleasant walks!
