Spotlight Breed: Field Spaniel

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. We are excited to teach you about a fun and unique dog breed from around the world! Our spotlight breed of the week is the Field Spaniel. The breed was initially developed to retrieve game from land or water. To this day, they retain their excellent hunting skills and serve as family companions. However, there is so much more to learn about the Field Spaniel. Please continue reading to discover some fun facts about the breed!

The Field Spaniel isn’t the most adaptable dog in the world. As we mentioned above, they were bred to perform a task. They cannot adapt to small homes and apartments because they lack space to be physically and mentally stimulated. They must have adequate space for mental and physical exercise. If not, destruction may occur, and that’s never a good thing!

The breed is one of the friendliest breeds in the world! The Field Spaniel is affectionate with family, and they love to form strong bonds. The breed is also friendly around children, other dogs, and strangers. Regardless of their natural abilities to be approachable, we still recommend that the breed complete basic obedience and socialization training. This will help them strengthen their personalities while assisting them in gaining additional confidence.

Let’s talk about training a Field Spaniel. To no surprise, the breed is intelligent. Easy-to-train dogs such as the Field Spaniel are more adept at forming an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence. Did we mention that the breed was intelligent? We sure did! Positive reinforcement will be your best friend while training this breed. They often have a “what’s in it for me?” attitude and love to be rewarded for a job well done!

You will never be bored with a Field Spaniel! We believe that this breed’s owner must be active to keep up with the breed’s energetic lifestyle. The Field Spaniel is always looking for exciting activities to take part in. Keeping activities fun and engaging will help the Field Spaniel reach their maximum potential! Consider building your own dog agility course to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Are you looking for a fun-loving, energetic, and intelligent breed? If so, the Field Spaniel may be for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “Field Spaniel – Heritage of love, noble of heart, gentle of spirit, regal of stature…I shall grow to become your faithful companion…your defender…your best friend.”
