Choosing the Right Food Bowl for Your Dog

Choosing the Right Food Bowl for Your Dog

Back in the old days, pet owners would use any ordinary bowl to feed their dogs. People didn’t consider things like dog breed, size, eating style, or breed! However, in recent years, it has been discovered that different dogs have various needs when it comes to mealtimes. Using the wrong bowl can cause some serious consequences. Please continue reading as we give you an in-depth explanation of some of the most common dog bowls in the market today.

Shallow Bowls – This is probably the most common type of bowl out there. These are most appropriate for small to medium breed dogs. Because these bowls are shallow, it allows the smaller dog to comfortably reach all the way into the bowl without putting pressure on their throats.

Deep Bowls – These bowls are appropriate for dogs with long, thin snouts. They allow the dog to access their food more comfortably without chasing it around a shallow bowl.

Steep-Sides Bowls – These bowls are normally deep, with a narrower opening at the top and sides that are angled inward. Steep-sided dog bowls are the best choice for long-eared dogs. Otherwise, these types of dogs would normally be dragging their ears in their food and water! The unique shape of these bowls allows the dog to eat comfortably while their ears are kept clean and dry.

Elevated Bowls – This is an excellent choice for large breeds or senior dogs with certain limitations following surgery, or with arthritis or joint pain. Available in a wide range of heights and sizes, these bowls are designed to allow larger dogs to eat comfortably, without putting unnecessary strain on joints as the dog bends to eat or drink.

Slow-Feed Bowls – These bowls are not designed for any specific breed or size of dog in mind. They are an excellent option for any dog that tends to eat too fast.

We bet you didn’t know that there were so many different dog bowls! As you can see, bowls range from shallow to elevated. It is your responsibility as a pet owner to figure out the best bowl for your dog.
