How to Create an Emergency Plan for Pets

Unfortunately, you may experience natural disasters such as earthquakes, tornadoes, or hurricanes (to name a few). In addition, you may have to overcome “common” emergencies such as house fires or flooding. During a life-threatening emergency, you must have the items to keep you and your pets safe. You may not have much time to evacuate your home. With this said, having an emergency plan for you and your pet is a good idea.

We recommend creating an emergency preparedness kit to help you in an immediate evacuation. You may wonder what you will need. Please look at our recommendations below. You should include these items in your kit at a minimum.

A couple of days’ worth of canned food and water All health records for your pet – vaccinations, documents, etc.

First-aid supplies

Food and water bowls

Crate

Blankets

A few toys and treats

Disposable bags and potty pads

An extra leash and collar with tags that have the most recent information

So you have all these items and just built your emergency preparedness kit. What do you do next? Put all of these items in a tote or container and place it in an area that you can access easily. Make sure that everyone in your family knows where the kit is! That way, everyone will be equally prepared in an emergency.

We hope you follow our tips on creating an emergency plan for your pets. Your priority is their health and safety; the emergency preparedness kit will help tremendously. Prevent additional stress by being prepared. Stay safe!
