Spotlight Breed: Akita Pit

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to teach you about the Akita Pit today. This dog is a mixed breed – a cross between the Akita and American Pit Bull Terrier. If we had to choose three words to sum up this breed, we would select loyal, intelligent, and protective. However, there is so much more to learn if you continue reading!

Akita pits are also known as Pit Akita or Akita Pit Bull. Both the Pit Bull and Akitas have long, fascinating histories. The Akita was initially called the Matagi-inu, which means “hunting dog.” A few centuries later, they were bred as fighting dogs in Japan. This is because there were improvements in fighting capabilities when the breeds crossed. Fun fact: the breed received an official designation as a national treasure in Japan!

Let’s talk about the temperament of the breed. The Akita Pit receives many of its temperament characteristics from its parents. The breed is strong-willed and single-minded. However, they love to form close bonds with their “pack.” If the breed is trained well from the beginning, they are friendly and intelligent.

The Akita Pit has an average energy level. They will need plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep them content and healthy. We recommend that the breed receive at least two 20-minute walks or some stimulating exercise in a fenced area. Think outside the box when you are coming up with activities for the Akita Pit. They are excellent hikers and love a good jog around the neighborhood!

Are you looking for a loyal companion who is active and intelligent? The Akita Pit may be for you! Our favorite quote about the breed is “Anything your dog can do; my Akita Pit can do it better!”
