Puppy Potty Pads 101

Bringing a new puppy home for the first time is always fun and exciting. Then reality sets in, and you realize you must take the time to housetrain! There is no need to worry as this is routine as a new puppy parent. The goal of potty training is simple, but some things need to be clarified. This is where potty pads come into play.

The ideal situation is to have your four-legged friend go potty outside. Of course, this is what you are trying to train them to do!

However, potty pads can help create an effective potty training plan.

Patience and consistency go a long way, especially when training a new puppy! Potty training takes time and commitment. You may want to rethink dog ownership if you are unwilling to invest time and effort.

It is important to note that every puppy is different. However, most puppies cannot control their bladder until they are 16 weeks old.

Supervising your puppy by frequently taking them to the potty pad would be best. Set a schedule and stick to it so that you prevent accidents. If you cannot supervise your puppy during certain times, ensure that the puppy is in a crate or safe area. Pay attention to the exact times that your puppy goes potty. Visit the puppy pad during those times each day to create a good habit.

You may wonder why potty pads are implemented in housetraining. Puppy pads are excellent for creating a schedule and helping your puppy learn good habits. Are you ready for your puppy to train outdoors more often? If so, you can move the puppy pad closer to the door each day, eventually moving it outside. Another benefit of the puppy pad is that your dog will learn that it is a place to “release” when they have to go potty and cannot go outside. Do not forget the treats. It is best that you reward your puppy for its good behavior as they progress through house training!
