Help! My Dog Won’t Use the Stairs

As odd as it may sound, there are dogs out there who have a fear of stairs. It doesn’t matter if it is a straight staircase or a spiral climb…the fear is real! Some dog owners do not know how to go about training their dogs how to use stairs, so they opt for carrying up their four-legged friend. As much as we love a good workout, dog owners shouldn’t have to do this. Do you have a dog who is afraid of stairs? If so, we have some recommendations for you.

The first step is to make the stairs less frightening. For example, the openness of a spiral staircase frightens many dogs. This terrifying view can be improved by covering the gaps between the railings and the risers with posterboard or cardboard. Dogs may feel much more confident if they are unable to see the open space or floor below. You may also consider non-slip treads as they not only make slipping less likely, but less scary as well.

Another thing that you can try is to implement treats. Begin by taking a step toward your dog and tossing them treats as you gradually make your way up the stairs. When they seem happy about your approach, take two steps, and continue to toss the treats. Make your way up the staircase, using the treats as a reward (or distraction), allowing your dog to realize that they are not a bad thing.

The biggest recommendation that we can offer is to be consistent! It will take time to teach your dog that stairs are okay. By limiting their anxiety and fear, you will help them in the long run. By covering the stairs to make them feel more enclosed and implementing treats, you should be able to make some progress!
