Hiking with Your Dog – The Essentials

Hiking with Your Dog – The Essentials

Hiking can be a wonderful experience for you and your dog as it provides both mental and physical stimulation!  It is a special way to bond with your four-legged friend while enjoying the beauty of nature.  We must take safety seriously as there may be a risk of heat-stroke, hazards, and even aggressive wildlife along the trails.  Here are some tips to consider before you head out on your next hiking adventure:

  1. Health is #1!  It is important to make sure that your dog is healthy and capable of hiking in the first place.  Use your own judgement and do not bring unfit dogs on the hike with you.  Keep in mind that not all dogs are meant to be hiking companions.
  2. Leash up!  First of all, you will need to verify that dogs are allowed on the hiking trail.  Be aware that most national and state parks do not allow dogs.  Keep your dog always leashed, regardless of if they are fully trained to be off leash.  This will ensure safety and a peace of mind for sudden hazards.
  3. Breaks are important!  Make sure that you are making frequent stops along the trail to offer your dog water and occasional treats.  This is extremely important as you do not want them to get heatstroke.  As a rule of thumb, do not feed your dog 30 right before the hike as they may get ill along the way.
  4. Respect the environment!  Be sure that you are picking up after your dog along the hiking trails.  Pack along pet waste bags and use and dispose of them accordingly.
  5. Pack supplies!  We recommend that you pack the following supplies for your hiking adventure:
  • Food and treats
  • Water
  • Collapsible bowls
  • Pet first aid kit
  • Pet insect repellent
  • Leashes
  • Protective dog clothing

As you can see, there are many tips which will yield the safest and most effective hiking adventure.  Being prepared is the best thing that you can do!
