Help! My Dog Is Afraid of the Vacuum!

Believe it or not, vacuums can be traumatic to our four-legged friends. Many reactions may come with encountering a vacuum. It is common for dogs to run away in fear or lunge or bark at the vacuum. You may wonder if there is a way to teach your dog to get used to the vacuum. The good news is that you can encourage a positive association with the vacuum. Allow us to explain further.

Let’s identify why most dogs dislike vacuums in the first place. Do you realize how loud vacuum machines are? Exactly! They are noisy and disruptive. In addition, vacuums take up a lot of space, and the cords can get in the way. We are also referring to “robovacs” that are self-propelling and turn corners when you least expect it!

It’s time to explain how to form a positive association between the dog and the vacuum. When the vacuum machine runs, you can always put your dog in a different room. However, that is not the point we are trying to make here. You must change your dog’s perception of the vacuum. Have a family member help you with this task by having them vacuum. As they are vacuuming, give your dog some treats and let them know it is okay and they are safe. Repeat the process several times until your dog gets the hang of it.

Familiarizing your dog with the movement of the vacuum is equally important. Have your helper move the vacuum around the floor while you administer treats and enforce positivity. You know you have mastered this training objective when your dog stays calm. Remember that a lot of patience and consistency will go a long way. It may take time for your dog to get used to the vacuum, but it will be worth it in the end!
