Fighting Anxiety with These Popular Dog Breeds

Did you know that people who experience high amounts of anxiety may benefit from owning a dog?  Talk about a true best friend!  However, it is important to know that not just any dog will do.  There are certain breeds that are naturally inclined to help their owners relax.  Many of these breeds are “therapy” dogs as they help their owners cope with anxiety.  We came up with a list of some of the most popular hounds to help address this issue!  Do you know anyone who suffers from anxiety?  Be sure to share this article with them as it may help tremendously.

  • Boxer – Boxers are excellent when it comes to therapy and determining how their owners feel at any given time. They have a natural sense of knowing when someone is unhappy, frightened, or sad.  They are known to give their owners a “nudge” to make sure that everything is okay from time to time.
  • Newfoundland – This breed is great with water! If you love the natural environment, a Newfoundland is known to follow you into the water and swim with you.  Swimming is a win-win because it helps reduce anxiety.  Why not have your four-legged friend help you along the way?
  • Great Dane – When properly socialized, these gentle giants are loyal, loving, and very obedient. Great Danes are extremely affectionate and make it their goal to bond closely with their “pack”.
  • Cocker Spaniel – This is a beautiful breed with large, kind eyes which will melt your heart! Most Cocker Spaniels have a very calm and steady nature that is relaxing to be around.  They also love to cuddle!
  • Bernard – This may be the most patient dog breed on the planet! The good thing about St. Bernard’s is that they will protect their family but overall are not considered to be an aggressive breed.  They have also been widely used as service dogs, particularly in search and rescue.

There are quite a few more dogs that can aide in helping their owners overcome or cope with anxiety.  We recommend that you do your research to determine the best breed for you, or anyone else who experiences anxiety.
