Dog Weight

You may start to wonder how many pounds your dog should weigh.  Many times, dogs will gain weight as they progress in age.  Keeping your dog at a healthy weight is best to keep them happy and healthy along the way!  Dogs who are overweight tend to have many health issues such as diabetes or joint issues.  On the other hand, thin dogs may be malnourished.  This article will go into more detail about how much your dog should weigh and what you can do to ensure that they stay at a healthy weight.

It is important to realize that your dog doesn’t normally need to be at a certain number, but a specific range.  This range will depend on your dog’s breed, living conditions, diet, and age.  Dogs who are more active will be on the thinner side but will be required to eat more food than an older dog who spends their day sleeping.  The best thing that you can do as a dog owner is to make sure you are feeding your dog a well-balanced and nutrition diet so that they can maintain a healthy weight.

How can you tell if your dog is overweight?  If you look at your dog and notice that their stomach is bloated or distended, they may be overweight.  Most of the time, overweight dogs eat way too much food and do not get adequate exercise.  Another sign is that you will not be able to feel any of their ribs or backbone even with a little pressure.

How can you tell if your dog is underweight?  This is usually easier to identify compared to overweight dogs.  If you are petting your dog, they may feel a little more bony than usual or you can easily feel their hip bones.  There may be extreme cases where you will be able to see your dog’s ribs, backbone, or leg bones without even touching your dog.  You may also notice that your underweight dog is a little more lethargic.  This is due to the malnutrition.

You are probably wondering how much your dog should weigh.  We recommend that you speak with your veterinarian for further advice.  They will be able to help you figure out an ideal weight for your dog and what you can do to ensure that they are on the right track.  Keep in mind that older dogs will weigh less than physically active dogs because they do not eat as much as middle-aged dogs.  In addition, puppies will weigh less as they are still growing and reaching their adult weight.
