Benadryl for Dogs

Benadryl for Dogs

Humans and dogs react VERY differently when it comes to medications.  This is why there is such a caution involved with pet owners making independent decisions about how to medicate their animals.  However, some human medications are safe to use with dogs, as long as they are used appropriately.

Benadryl can be used to treat allergies, travel anxiety and motion sickness.  In fact, Veterinarians use this drug for dogs on a regular basis.  Benadryl is the brand name for the active ingredient diphenhydramine HCL.  This is a first-generation antihistamine which is a scientific way of classifying antihistamines that can cross the blood-brain barrier from those that cannot.  Long story short, Benadryl works by blocking the receptors that receive histamines in the body.

This is a great medicine to use for dogs with mild-to-moderate allergies.  One of the main side effects is drowsiness, which helps to calm anxious dogs.  This means that Benadryl can also be used for dogs who struggle with traveling (nervousness and/or motion sickness).

Before you grab the Benadryl, ask your Veterinarian about your dog’s symptoms.  What you may think is an “allergy” symptom may actually be a more serious condition.  Pet owners will also need to ask their Veterinarian how much Benadryl to give their dog.  Keep in mind that it is possible to overdose on Benadryl.  Signs can be very fatal including: rapid heartbeat, constipation, seizures, agitation or dilated pupils.  If you suspect that your dog has overdosed on Benadryl, contact your Veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately.
