Why Do Dogs Lick Humans

Why Do Dogs Lick Humans?

There is nothing better than a kiss from a happy pup!  Many dog owners believe that licks from their dog are a sign of affection.  In other words, this is the closest that your canine can get to kissing you.  We must take a step back and see if this is accurate.  Let us explain!

As odd as it sounds, what you interpret as affection might be your dog encouraging you to throw up your lunch for them.  Odd, right?!  Similarly, your dog could simply think that you taste nice.  Humans have slightly salty skin, especially after sweating during exercise.  When your dog goes in for a lick, they may be trying to seek salt rather than give affection.  It is also common for your dog to lick your face after you finish a delicious meal.

Back to the point of affection.  There is evidence that licking is sometimes a sign of affection.  It may start out as a food-seeking behavior, but licking has now become a ritualized greeting for many dogs.  This could mean that they are happy that you are home or generally just excited to see you!  Licking can also give a dog a feeling of security and comfort, just as the dog had when its mother licked them in their litter.

It is important to know that most licking is harmless.  However, licking can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious problem.  If your dog is licking themselves, you, or objects excessively, it may be a sign of boredom, pain, or anxiety.  We recommend that you speak to your veterinarian if this happens to your four-legged friend.  They will be able to determine the reason behind it.
