Why is My Dog Eating Grass?

Do you ever find yourself on a long walk with your dog, only to discover them making several pit stops to eat grass along the way?  If so, we understand why you may be concerned.  For most of the time, your dog may be fine, but there are some cases where your dog’s diet or GI system needs some attention.  This article will explain why your dog may be eating grass and what you can do to help them stop.

The word “pica” is important.  This means that your dog is eating something other then food.  Pica can indicate that your dog has a nutritional deficiency.  Otherwise, they may be perfectly normal.  Another reason why dogs may eat grass is because of boredom or they like the taste of it.

Additionally, there are many reasons why your dog may want to eat grass. See below.

  • Your dog may not be feeling well and may be eating the grass to make themselves throw up.  This has not been researched, but instead serves as a popular theory.
  • Your puppy may be teething.  They may eat grass, twigs, sticks, and other outdoor things while they are trying to teeth.  This may help ease the pain that comes along with it.
  • Grass may help with digestion.  It contains a fiber which will help your dog properly digest their food.
  • It may help with parasites and intestinal worms.
  • There are a few good ways to keep your dog from eating grass:
  • Ensure that they have enough vegetables and fiber in their diet.  You can add things like lettuce or cucumbers to their meals.
  • Incorporate treats and praise.  Positive reinforcement will ensure that they do not eat grass.  If they try to eat grass, redirect them and give them a treat.
  • Speak with your Veterinarian.  There may be an underlying medical condition.  Your Vet can make sure that your dog does not have a nutritional deficiency or any GI problems.
  •  Exercise will help keep your dog’s mind off the grass.  This will leave them less bored!

There are many things that you can do to train your dog not to eat grass.  If your dog continues to eat grass, you will need to speak with your Veterinarian about the next steps.
