Spotlight Breed: American Eskimo Dog
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to spotlight the American Eskimo Dog today. This breed, also known as “Eskie” is a cheerful, enigmatic dog with a rich history. These dogs appeared in the United States in the 19th century and were often found with German immigrants. In the late 19th century and into the early 20th century, these dogs were popular in circuses and other forms of entertainment doing tricks.
The American Eskimo Dog needs to interact with their owners. As with most breeds, especially Nordic breeds, other pets, such as rodents, reptiles, and birds should be kept away from the Eskie. The breed makes an excellent watchdog as they are very suspicious of strangers. In fact, some Eskies can bark excessively if not properly trained.
The Eskie has a thick coat to withstand harsh winters. However, they prefer to be with their families and should not be made into an exclusive outdoor dog. This breed is ideal for people who want a small to medium-sized active dog that does not require a large yard and can be content with walks or a game of fetch. Keep in mind that American Eskimo Dogs do not do well left alone for long periods of time. If you are required to be away from the house most of the time, this is not a breed for you!
If you couldn’t already tell, the Eskie is a family dog. They are extremely loyal to their pack. Keep in mind that they are very intelligent which makes them stubborn at times too. Positive reinforcement will need to be implemented into your training program. They must be socialized with people, or they can become overly wary of strangers. With proper socialization along with proper introduction, Eskies warm up to strangers and accept them for the most part.
If you are looking for a fun-loving, intelligent, and cute dog breed, the American Eskimo Dog may be a good fit for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “American Eskimo Dog Rules: 1. I found it, it’s mine. 2. I chewed it all up, it’s mine. 3. I had it all day yesterday, it’s mine. 4. I have it buried someplace. It’s mine. 5. If I broke it, it’s yours!”
