The Cost of Owning a Dog

The Cost of Owning a Dog

To be completely honest, dogs can be expensive! There is no way that you can predict all costs associated with owning a pet, but anyone who is willing to sacrifice the time and money to bring a pet into their home will be able to find a way. We have created a list of things that you should consider when adopting your new four-legged friend.

Food and Treats – This is probably the most important thing that you need to consider! You may be able to feed your dog for a very low cost per year, but you must look at the overall nutritional value of the food. The good thing is that you can supplement meals with fresh veggies and protein. That might help you save money in the long run!

Supplies – Think about the basics like a leash and collar. Those things cost money and you may have to purchase replacements as the years go by. What about food and water bowls? Depending on the type of dog, you may be able to spend a little less on these.

Vet Care – Do not forget about this one! Every dog needs to go to the vet at least once a year. The routine vet visit cost varies widely by type of facility and geographic location. Factor in costs like office visits, routine vaccinations, dental work, and x-rays.

License – Did you know that some cities and counties require dogs to be licensed? The fees vary, but if you fail to get your dog licensed, you may end up paying a hefty fine. That’s no good!

Toys – This is a need, not a want! All dogs need toys to provide them mental and physical stimulation. Some dogs live a happy life with a worn-out tennis ball while others get bored and need something new each week. We recommend that you check out thrift stores for some options. You may be able to find stuffed animals that will get the job done at a cheaper price!

Beds and Crates – Beds and crates are lifestyle choices. Do you want your dog to be crate-trained? You will need to purchase a crate. The same goes for a bed. If you allow them to sleep with you, you can save on these costs as well.

Doggie Daycare or Training – Do you plan to enroll your dog in Doggie Daycare or Training? Look at the big picture and add up the costs. Most facilities offer package deals which may save you more in the long run!

The bottom line is pets can be expensive! Keep in mind that when you adopt a pet, you adopt a pet for life. With a little planning and saving along the way, owning a dog can be accessible and affordable.
