Spotlight Breed: Bernese Mountain Dog
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we speak about one of the most interesting dog breeds of the world! Today we are excited to feature the Bernese Mountain Dog. This breed is extremely versatile as they were bred to be a working dog on the farmlands of Switzerland. They had the ability to herd cattle, pull carts, and be watchdogs and loyal companions. Interesting fact: they are one of four types of Swiss Mountain Dogs, and the only one with long hair. However, there is so much more to note when it comes to this breed!
If we had to choose three words to describe the Bernese Mountain Dog, we would choose: friendly, calm, and intelligent. A novice dog parent might be attracted to this breed’s friendly disposition, intelligence, and highly trainable nature. However, first-time dog owners should know that this breed’s high energy can make handling difficult. Therefore, we do not recommend this breed to live in a small home or apartment. They need constant mental and physical stimulation! The Bernese Mountain Dog is one of the most sensitive breeds out there. They take a lot to heart, but this also means that their bond is top notch. They love with all their heart!
This breed receives 5 stars when it comes to their all-around friendliness. They are affectionate with family and love being around their “pack”. They enjoy kids and can also be friendly towards strangers. It is a hit or miss with other dogs though. Good socialization skills will need to be taught for the Bernese Mountain Dog to properly associate with other dogs. This breed is also easy to train. They can form an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence. Watch out though. Due to their high intelligence levels, they often have a “what’s in it for me?” attitude. Positive reinforcement will be your best friend!
