Plastic Bags Are a Risk to Dogs

Not only are plastic bags bad for the environment, but they also aren’t good for dogs. We all know that dogs love to explore and get anything they can get their mouths or paws on. Do not underestimate the plastic bag. Our research concluded that dogs had been known to eat plastic bags simply out of curiosity. The good news is that this can be prevented.

You must contact your veterinarian immediately if your dog has eaten a plastic bag. Seriously, there is no time to waste in this situation. The vet may advise that you induce vomiting because a dog’s digestive system cannot digest plastic. Unfortunately, there are a lot of negative health concerns with dogs eating plastic bags. Symptoms that your dog may experience include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Gagging
  • Lying in a different position
  • Bloating

All of these can be signs that your dog has the bag caught in its throat or they are experiencing an intestinal blockage. Once again, please get in touch with the veterinarian immediately if you notice any of these symptoms! You will more than likely must make a trip to the vet. The veterinarian will determine how the bag will safely pass through your dog’s system. We do not want to scare you, but surgery may be required to remove the bag.

As always, prevention is critical. Do your best to ensure that plastic bags are out of your dog’s reach. If an accident occurs and your dog eats a plastic bag, act fast to avoid serious health concerns.
