How to Spot Fleas on Dogs

The weather is warmer, and fleas are making a big appearance out and about! Is your four-legged friend biting themselves, scratching more than ever, or shaking their head? If so, they may have fleas. This means that an inspection is needed to determine the culprit. Let’s get started.

The good news is that flea infestation is not that difficult to spot on a dog’s body. You must look for tiny dark insects that are smaller than ants. One of the weirdest facts about fleas is that they love to “live” in your dog’s armpit and groin areas. This is because these areas are warm, and the fleas feel protected. However, we should not allow them to get so comfortable on our dogs!

Use a flea comb or your fingers to expose your dog’s skin. You may notice the following signs if fleas are present:

You may see fleas that jump.

You may see larvae that have hatched and are developing into adults.

Your dog’s skin may be red and bumpy.

The flea comb will capture some of the fleas. Grab a bowl and add warm soapy water to it. Place the fleas in the water to ensure they don’t survive. You must get rid of fleas quickly if you find them on your dog. We also recommend using flea shampoo to give your dog some quick relief. You may also try a flea collar or treatment for your dog’s fur.

Another important thing is that you will need to treat your home and yard. If not, dogs will pick up the fleas again, and you will return to square one! Research the best spray, indoor fogger, and carpet powder to eliminate fleas in and around the house. If you need help after following our tips, please consult your veterinarian for assistance. You will need to get the fleas resolved quickly!
