Four Warning Signs that Your Dog is Sick

Have you noticed a change in your dog’s behavior? Unfortunately, our dogs cannot speak, so it can be challenging to figure out what is wrong with them. Some symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea let us know that our dogs are not feeling well. However, there are other things to look out for as well.

  1. They are not eating. Our four-legged friends love to eat. They rarely miss a meal or treat! Pay close attention if your dog does not want to eat. Many things may cause a dog not to eat. These include tooth pain, anxiety, nausea, hormonal disorders, and viral infections.
  2. They are drinking a lot of water. This is also known as polydipsia. Some of the common causes of this include hormonal conditions such as diabetes or Cushing’s disease.
  3. They are just lying around. If you notice that your dog is sleeping more, walking a little slower on walks, or not wanting to play, something may be wrong. It is important to know that viral, bacterial, or fungal infections can cause energy loss.
  4. You can feel their ribs. Have you noticed that your dog’s ribs or hops are sticking out? If so, they should be examined by a veterinarian. Weight loss can be challenging to detect, and sometimes pet parents do not know that their dog has lost weight until they are weighed at the veterinarian. This can be an issue because weight loss can contribute to not eating enough or absorbing enough nutrients.

You know your dog better than anyone else. Be proactive in paying close attention to their actions and behaviors. Do not ignore anything out of the ordinary.
