Dogs & Music

When it comes to music, dogs like a variety.  No, we’re not joking! The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals conducted a study which played six-hours of a variety of music to shelter dogs.  Some of the genres included: soft rock, pop, reggae and classical.  During the course of the study, heart rates, cortisol levels, and certain behaviors were measured.

Ultimately, the dogs appeared to be less “stressed” when they heard the music.  Classical, reggae and soft rock were the genres that had the biggest impact on their stress levels.  The researchers stated that dogs had personal preferences of their tastes in music, just like humans do.

So the next time you are listening to music, pay close attention to your pet.  You may be able to determine their likes and dislikes.  There are many “dog-friendly” music playlists.  Go out and explore!  Consider leaving their favorite music on for them while you are away from the house.  It may make a huge difference!
