Cold weather dog breeds are made to withstand the harshest winter temperatures with ease.  These dogs are no stranger to snow and have a history of having jobs in the arctic climates either pulling sleds or helping their owners.  Below is our list of some of the best dog breeds for winter weather that will excel in cold climates.

  1. Alaskan Malamute – This breed is known to be the biggest of the arctic sled dogs.  They are a native to Alaska and have been known to be one of the oldest arctic dog breeds around the globe today.
  2. Siberian Husky – This breed has a unique appearance.  The Siberian Husky originated in Siberia as a working sled breed which would assist humans by carrying goods in cold conditions.
  3. Saint Bernard – Talk about a big teddy bear type of breed!  St. Bernard’s have been used to find humans trapped in the snows of mountains for quite some time.
  4. Tibetan Terrier – As you probably guessed from the name, this breed originated from Tibet.  They were originally a guarding breed in the snowy mountains.
  5. Newfoundland – This breed can reach a whopping 150 pounds as an adult!  They have been used in water rescues of all kinds.  They have thick fur and a hefty body which allows them to handle the harshest of environments.
