Tips for Winter Hiking with Dogs
Depending on where you live, it gets cold, dark, and snowy during the winter months! However, if you are an avid hiker, these conditions may not stop you from enjoying a hike with your four-legged friend. When you are hiking in the winter, you need to take extra steps and precautions along the way. It is much different than hiking during the other seasons of the year! Check out our five winter safety tips for hiking with dogs below.
- Dress accordingly. Humans should know to dress according to the weather. For example, we incorporate boots, wool socks, gloves, and coats during the winter months. What about the dog though? Winter weather is vicious on your dog’s paws, especially in frozen areas. Consider getting your dog boots if you are planning to take them on long hikes. The same goes for a jacket or sweater, depending on their breed and how cold it is.
- Stay hydrated. We believe that it is easier to stay hydrated in the summer because of the heat. Staying hydrated in the winter is equally as important. Be sure to focus on adequate hydration before, during, and after the hike.
- Leash up. If you are in a park which requires your dog to be leashed, then your dog will need to be leashed. However, if you are in an off-leash area, we still recommend that your dog is leashed. Winter can be dangerous. Think about frozen water that may appear solid. Your dog could crack it and get injured. Do your best to avoid this kind of stuff!
- Be reflective. The winter days are short and sometimes we do not get to see a lot of sun. Both you and your dog should wear reflective, or neon gear no matter what time of the day. It may not be a bad idea to bring a flashlight as well. This extra safety measure wouldn’t hurt one bit!
- Stick to familiar places. If you have never hiked an area before, winter isn’t the time to try it out. It may be more challenging to find your way in the depths of winter.
Other than these tips, it is important to have FUN! Hiking with your dog in the winter can be very rewarding, plus, it’s a great workout! Be safe!
