Itch Relief for Dogs

There could be many reasons why your dog may be itching themselves.  Itchy dogs will scratch, chew, lick, and shake themselves so often that it may become a huge annoyance.  It is your responsibility as a dog owner to determine the cause of the itch and the steps to prevent it.  This article will explain why your dog is itching and some tips on how to relieve the symptoms.

Unfortunately, fleas are one of the most common reasons why dogs may itch themselves.  When fleas bite your dog, it can cause intense itching.  There may also be dogs with flea allergies who can develop horrible skin infections just from one flea bite.  Allergies may also cause your dogs to itch.  It is important to know that dogs can have environmental and food allergies just like humans do.  Dogs may be allergic to things in the air like grass, pollen, or dust mites.

There are many treatments that your veterinarian can prescribe to help them with their itching.  One of which is a medication known as Apoquel which targets one of the components of the immune system that causes itching.  If you are unable to get to the veterinarian right away, there are some things that you can do at home for your itchy dog.  Please see our list of recommendations below.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar Spray – Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water in a bottle.  Spray it onto the dry, itchy spot.  The good thing about vinegar is that it is a natural antiseptic.
  • Coconut Oil – We have explained the many benefits of coconut oil before!  Apply the coconut oil directly to the area of the itch.  This will also help kill off fleas!
  • Baking Soda – We bet you didn’t think about this one!  Baking soda can be used in a bath soak for itchy, dry skin.
  • Aloe Vera – Topical aloe plant products for dogs are safe if they are alcohol-free.  Aloe vera does a great job of tackling the itch.

As you can see, itchy skin can be caused by several things.  Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose and treat your dog effectively.  However, you may find quicker relief if you follow some of our recommendations listed above.  The sooner you identify the cause, the better!
