Warning Signs of Feeding Your Dog Too Many Treats

Let’s face it. Dogs absolutely love treats! Whether these treats are used in positive reinforcement or during random times, it is possible that your four-legged friend may be consuming too many treats. Unfortunately, this can cause many health and behavioral issues along the way. Below is a list of warning signs to keep an eye out for which may indicate that your dog is eating too many treats.

  1. Not obeying without treats. We mentioned above that positive reinforcement training may be one of the reasons why your dog is getting treats. If so, you may discover that your dog will not sit, stay, lay down, or come without a treat. This is because they continue to expect treats for accomplishing tasks.
  2. Demanding. Your dog may start demanding treats after certain activities. As an example, you may notice that your dog is wanting a treat after you get home from work or go for walk.
  3. Aggression. If your dog shows any sign of aggression toward you, you will need to eliminate the treats immediately. Aggression which is brought on by treats can lead to injury. It’s not safe.
  4. Potty time. Do you normally give your dog a treat if they go potty? If so, you may discover that they want to go outside. Not to potty, but to get a treat.
  5. Weight gain. Is your dog overweight? If so, it is time to cut back on the treats! Giving your dog too many snacks will result in unhealthy weight that your dog does not need.

When it comes to treats, less is best! Outsmart your dog and do not allow them to trick you into getting more treats. Pay close attention to the calories and reward treats when necessary.
