Types of Fiber for Dogs

You may be wondering if your four-legged friend if getting enough fiber in their diet. Fiber has many of the same benefits for dogs that it does for humans. The good thing about fiber is that it helps move food through the gastrointestinal tract, helping to keep stools firm. It is a way to promote good digestive health. There are two basic types of fiber: insoluble and soluble. We will outline them below.

Insoluble Fiber – This type of fiber aids in normal digestive motility and function by promoting a healthy digestive system. Insoluble fibers have the sponge-like effect of absorbing water, which can help soften and add bulk to stools. This aids their passage through the digestive tract. When your dog gets enough insoluble fiber, you are ensuring that they will have regular bowel movements while preventing constipation. How can you add insoluble fiber to your dog’s diet? High fiber fruits and vegetables including apples, blueberries, and carrots are good treats for dogs that will raise their insoluble fiber content.

Soluble Fiber – This type of fiber has a greater water-holding capacity and can form gels within the digestive tract. Some soluble fibers are known as “prebiotic fibers”. These fibers help keep the cells of the digestive system healthy. What is interesting is that they are selectively fermented by beneficial bacteria in the large intestine and produce a substance called Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs). They serve as an energy source for the cells of the large intestine and increase the number of bacteria for good digestive health. There are many fog foods on the market that focus on soluble fiber to aid in your dog’s diet. You may also add items like beans, chickpeas, chia, and flax seeds to help digestion.
