Tips for Walking Your Dog in Hot Weather

The year is flying by, and Summer is right around the corner! As we all know, higher temperatures are present during this time. You will need to take extra precautions to ensure that your dog is comfortable and safe during the “dog days of Summer”. This means that you will need to choose the best time to walk your dog. Consistent walks are essential, not only to provide exercise to your dog, but to allow them to release their bladder and bowels. Below are some tips how you can make hot weather dog walks a success.

Is it too hot? You may be wondering how you know if it is too hot to walk your dog. Experts say that it is generally safe to walk your four-legged friend in temperatures up to 68 degrees. Another over 77 degrees may be deemed risky. Humidity needs to be considered as well.

Plan walk times accordingly. Please know that the temperatures are at their highest in the middle and later part of the day. Therefore, it is recommended that you walk your dog early in the morning or late in the evening. This also ensures that the ground has had time to cool so that it is comfortable for your dog to walk on it. If you must walk your dog during the hottest part of the day, opt for a shaded area.

Check the ground temperature. Test the ground temperature with the back of your hand before you head outside with your dog. If it is too hot to hold there for five seconds, it will be too hot for your dog’s paws. You will need to wait until the ground is cooler to start your walk.

Adjust the routine. You may want to adjust your walking routine during the hottest days of the year. As an example, you should avoid extra sunny areas and hills. This will help reduce the temperature and intensity of the walk.

Hydration is key. Are you planning to go on a longer walk? If so, it is easy for your dog to get dehydrated along the way. Bring a collapsible water bowl and some fresh, cool water so that you can offer your dog a drink during the walk. Do not allow your dog to drink water from puddles or ponds as this can make them ill.

As you can see, weather plays an important role in a successful summer dog walk. As a pet owner, you will need to do your part to ensure the safety of your dog. Always remember that if it’s too hot for you, then it’s too hot for them!
