Teaching Your Dog to Shake

Teaching Your Dog to Shake

Teaching your dog how to shake is an advanced trick. This trick is also known as “giving a paw.” Whether an experienced dog owner or a newbie, you can teach your dog how to shake by following a few simple steps below.

  1. Have your dog “sit.”
  2. Grab a treat and show it off before hiding it in your closed fist.
  3. Hold out your fist, palm facing up, at about your dog’s chest level.
  4. It may be instinct for your dog to paw at your fit to get the treat. When they do, open your hand, let them have the treat, and give them plenty of praise. Repeat these steps several times.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4, but this time without holding a treat in your hand. As soon as your dog paws at your fist, give them a treat from the other hand.
  6. Once your dog understands what you want it to do, it’s time to add the word “shake.” Your four-legged friend will be able to associate the word with the action.

As always, consistency and patience go a long way. It may take some time for your dog to learn this advanced trick! We recommend practicing for 10-15 minutes a day. Try it out. You will be amazed at what your dog can do!
