Spotlight Breed Rottweiler

Spotlight Breed: Rottweiler

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to feature the Rottweiler. This is a robust working breed of great strength which descended from the mastiffs of the Roman legions. Also known as the “Rottie”, this gentle playmate and protector within the family circle observes the outside world with self-assured aloofness. However, there is so much more to this breed. Continue reading to learn more!

Let’s start by talking about the looks of the Rottie. A male will stand anywhere from 24 to 27 inches at the shoulder. Female Rottweilers run a bit smaller and lighter. Weight can range from 80 to 120+ pounds. They have a glistening, short black coat with smart rust markings which add to the picture of imposing strength. As is common with larger breeds, Rotties can be slow maturing. Many do not reach full adult size until 2 or 3 years of age, although adult height is often set by one year of age.

The personality of this breed is one-of-a-kind! Rottweilers have been selected for guarding and protection work, and this must be always kept in mind.  Rotties who are well-socialized get along nicely with people and other dogs. However, males can be a bit dominant and aggressive. Active, intelligent dogs, they are fully confident enough to act on their own, so they need guidance right from the start.

Rotties are easy to keep for such large dogs but tend to obesity if not exercised enough. One of the most important things to note is that Rotties need extensive and continuous socialization to be good family companions. Training is a must and should be started early! This is not an ideal breed for a first-time dog owner.

If you are looking for an intelligent, loving, and confident dog, then the Rottweiler may be for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “Rottweilers make you laugh a little louder, smile a little brighter, and live a little better than before!”
