Spotlight Breed Rottweiler

Spotlight Breed: Rottweiler

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week.  This is where we teach you about one of the many interesting dog breeds of the world.  We are excited to talk about the Rottweiler today.  One of the most interesting facts about this breed is that it was originally bred to drive cattle to the market.  Later, they were used to pull carts for the butchers.  In fact, Rottweiler’s were among the earliest police dogs in the world.  If we had to sum of this breed in three words, we would choose loving, faithful, and intelligent.  However, there are so many more interesting features to note!

The adaptability range of a Rottweiler is not the best.  We do not recommend a novice dog owner to adopt this breed.  We will tell you why!  The Rottweiler will take a lot of work.  Their sensitivity level is very high, and they require a lot of attention.  They take many things to heart, but that also means that they can be super sweet too.  The Rottweiler is not well suited for apartment style or small home living.   They require additional space for mental and physical stimulation.  If these needs are not met then they will find other means of enjoyment, which may not always mean a good thing!

The Rottweiler is very friendly around their pack (family, kids, and most strangers).  They have so much love to give, and it shows.  However, when it comes to being around other dogs, Rottweilers may attack or try to dominate other dogs.  Therefore, basic obedience and socialization at a young age is so important for the Rottweiler breed.  The trainability of this breed is simple.  Rottweiler’s can form an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence.  They are VERY intelligent and do not have an issue using that to their advantage!  It is important to realize that Rottweilers tend to have a high prey drive.  If they see something that they want, you better believe that they are going to go after it!

The Rottweiler’s potential for playfulness is sky high.  We recommend an owner who is extremely active.  Their energy level and intensity will be sure to keep you on your feet at any given time.  If you are looking for your next running buddy, the “Rottie” is for you!  As you can see, there is a lot that the Rottweiler offers the world.  Our favorite quote about the breed is: “I have a dream that one day….ALL service dogs will be Rotties, then you might not see us as devil dogs!”
