Spotlight Breed Poodle

Spotlight Breed: Poodle

Our Spotlight Breed of the week is the Poodle!  Elegant, proud and clever….these words describe this breed to a T.  Behind the blue ribbons, impressive hairstyles and regal attitudes, poodles are a very affectionate family dog with an ancient history and many talents.

Poodles are known as one of the most intelligent breeds in the world.  They are highly trainable and well advanced allowing them to be well suited for pretty much any task.  This is a breed that must be stimulated at all times.  Bored poodles can get destructive if they lack stimulation.  Active owners who can meet their dog’s needs will find a smart, trainable and loyal companion.

Sizes of this breed can vary.  Going from smallest to largest, there are Toy, the Miniature, and the Standard poodle.  The Standard is probably the oldest of the three varieties, and some still carry on the Poodle tradition of working as a water retriever.  However, size doesn’t matter when it comes to this type of dog.  All of them are known to be playful, have a dignified personality and excel in any situation which involves intelligence.  Poodles are people-friendly dogs who want to stay close to their family.

Watch out though!  If you continue to spoil your poodle and don’t train them, they are likely to conclude that they are the alpha of the family.  In fact, obedience training is essential to keep the poodle’s mind active.  A good poodle who’s been taught canine manners has a calm disposition, especially if regular exercise is a part of their routine.

Consider adopting a poodle if you want a friendly, fun and intelligent companion!

We will leave you with our favorite quote about this breed.  “I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult.” – Rita Rudger
