Spotlight Breed: Otterhound
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. We are excited to teach you about a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! Our spotlight breed of the week is the Otterhound. This breed is highly uncommon, with less than ten litters born yearly in the United States and Canada! The Otterhound is a true working dog built with tons of stamina. However, there is much more to learn, so continue reading!
Let’s start by talking about the adaptability of the Otterhound. The physical needs of the breed, such as their high energy levels, intensity, and exercise requirements, make them unsuitable for small home or apartment living. We mentioned earlier that this breed is a working breed. They were initially bred for hunting otter in England. Therefore, mental and physical stimulation is a must for the Otterhound. Ensure that the breed has adequate space for activities of stimulation.
The Otterhound is one of the friendliest dogs in the world. They are affectionate with family and love to form strong bonds. They are also great with kids, other dogs, and strangers! Regardless of their instincts to be the kindest dog breed, we still recommend enrolling the Otterhound in basic obedience and socialization training. This will strengthen their skills and confidence!
You may run into some difficulties while training an Otterhound. The breed is intelligent and loves to show you what they are capable of. They can form associations between prompts, commands, and consequences. Positive reinforcement may be necessary as they love to be rewarded for their hard work!
The Otterhound has a prey drive that is out of this world! This makes sense, as they were bred to hunt! If the breed sees something that they want, they will attempt to do whatever it takes to get it! The free spirit of the Otterhound causes them to have a wanderlust potential. They would roam the city streets if you allowed them to do so!
Are you looking for a unique dog breed that is fun, active, and adorable? If so, the otterhound may be for you! We will leave you our favorite quote about the breed: “Otterhounds. Their affection is timeless, their devotion is ageless, and their love is forever.”
