Spotlight Breed Irish Terrier

Spotlight Breed: Irish Terrier

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. This is where we feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! We are excited to spotlight the Irish Terrier today. This breed was once described as “the farmer’s friend” and the “gentleman’s favorite.” These dogs have the advantages of a convenient size and versatility. However, there is so much more to learn!

For hundreds of years, the Irish Terrier has been a fixture of rural Ireland. They are considered to be the very model of an all-purpose farm dog. The Irish Terrier has earned its feed as a watchdog, flock and family guardian, and hunting companion on land and lake! They are also thought to be one of the oldest terrier breeds.

Let’s take a deep dive into the personality traits of the Irish Terrier. They are bold and intelligent with a personality reflective of their heritage as a companion, protector, and hunter. They often have a mind of their own which may lead to destruction if you aren’t careful! The Irish Terrier may struggle around other dogs. They can be aggressive, especially toward dogs of the same sex. However, training and boundaries will help in this situation.

The breed is very intelligent, but you may encounter issues with training. When training an Irish Terrier, you must have time, patience, and repetition. They often possess a “what’s in it for me?” attitude. This is where you will need to implement positive reinforcement into your training sessions.

The Irish Terrier is always ready and waiting for action. Their physical and mental needs must be met. Otherwise, they will become bored and cause issues. This breed loves to jump, play, and investigate new sights and smells!

Are you looking for an active, loyal, and protector breed? If so, the Irish Terrier may be for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “Silence is golden unless you have an Irish Terrier. Then it’s suspicious!”
