Spotlight Breed: Drever
Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week. We are excited to feature a fun and unique dog breed from around the globe! Our spotlight breed for the day is the Drever. If we had to choose three words to describe the Drever, we would select alert, hardworking, and loyal. Drevers also go by one other name, which is Swedish Dachsbracke. The breed is a short-legged scent hound used for hunting deer and other game.
One of the best things about the Drever is that they adapt well to a small home or apartment living. The size of the house doesn’t matter to the breed. Dogs like the Drever are not very sensitive. The breed lets a stern reprimand roll off their back. Because of their low sensitivity, the Drever is easygoing and can handle a bigger household. Keep in mind that the Drever does not tolerate being alone for long periods. Destruction may occur if the Drever is not physically and mentally stimulated.
Let’s talk about the friendliness of the breed. The Drever loves to give all of their affection to their family. Forming solid bonds is essential to the breed. The breed also loves to be around children and other dogs. Regarding interaction with strangers, the Drever may have some struggles. Enrolling dogs in doggie daycare or obedience training will help dogs like the Drever overcome any issues with strangers.
Easy-to-train dogs such as the Drever are more adept at quickly forming an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence. Keep in mind that the Drever was bred for a job that requires intelligence and concentration. These traits will be helpful while training the Drever. Another thing you should realize about the Drever is that they have a potential for mouthiness. The breed can be very vocal as they like to bark and howl. The good thing is that this can be addressed.
Are you looking for an intelligent dog breed that loves to form close bonds with the family? If so, the Drever may be for you! We will leave you with our favorite quote about the breed: “When I look into the eyes of a Drever, I do not see a dog. I see a living being. I see a friend. I feel a soul.”
