Spotlight Breed: Bloodhound

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week.  This is where we feature an interesting dog breed from around the globe.  We are excited to help you learn more about the Bloodhound today!  One of the most interesting facts about the Bloodhound is that their ancestors were created in medieval France with the purpose of trailing deer and boar.  Today, this highly intelligent and active dog breed with a strong sense of smell has found them in a place of law enforcement and rescue.  If we had to sum up the Bloodhound in three words, we would choose: compassionate, stubborn, and sensitive!

This breed needs firm, consistent training, and plenty of exercise.  If you can meet the consistent needs of this breed, you have found a forever friend!  The adaptability of the Bloodhound is so-so.  Honestly, they are not suited for apartment living.  They require more space to put their minds and bodies to work – mental and physical stimulation.  This is also a very sensitive breed.  They take a lot to heart, but their sensitivity shows that they love their “pack”.

The all-around friendliness of the Bloodhound is a 10 out of 10!  They are a breed that has never met a stranger in their life.  The Bloodhound is super affectionate with family and they bond very easily.  They enjoy being around kids, other dogs, and possibly strangers.  However, they are not afraid to stand their ground if need be.  Just be on the lookout for any issues which may neglect their temperament.

The health and grooming needs of the Bloodhound is intriguing and will require some adaptation.  They have a high potential of shedding and drooling.  Be prepared for wet spots and lots of dog hair!  The Bloodhound tends to shed hair year -round so we suggest that you invest in a good lint roller and vacuum cleaner.  The trainability of the breed is pretty good. The Bloodhound is very intelligent, but they often have a “what’s in it for me” attitude.  You will need to incorporate rewards into their training programs!

If you are looking for a dog breed that is high-energy, loving, and fun… the Bloodhound is for you!  We will leave you with our favorite quote about this breed: “Always be yourself… unless you can be a Bloodhound.  Then be a Bloodhound!”
