Spotlight Breed: Beagle

Hello and welcome to our Spotlight Breed blog of the week!  We are thrilled to talk about the Beagle today.  Are you an owner of a Beagle?  If so, be sure to share this article with a picture of your furry friend!  The Beagle ranks in the top 10 of the most popular dog breeds.  If we had to sum up their temperament in three words we would choose: curious, happy, and friendly.  Not only are Beagles known to be excellent hunting dogs and loyal companions, they are also very happy-go-lucky.

Many do not know that there are two different varieties of Beagles: those standing under 13 inches at the shoulder, and those between 13 and 15 inches.  Regardless of the height, all Beagles are sturdy, solid, and “big for their inches”.  They come in a variety of colors such as tricolor, red, and white, and even lemon.  One thing that they are known for is their cute adorable faces with big eyes paired with hound ears that set low on a broad head.  You will never be able to miss a Beagle, even if you tried!

The adaptability level of a Beagle is so-so.  They can adapt well to smaller homes, but they do not really like to be alone.  Pay them plenty of attention and they will be your best friend!  Their all-around friendliness ranks high amongst all dog breeds.  They are affectionate with family, kids, other dogs and even strangers.  Let’s just say that they are the extroverts of the dog world!  Beagle owners should realize that there is a potential for weight gain.  With this breed you will need to limit treats and make sure that they get enough daily exercise.

The Beagle is super intelligent but approach any sort of training with a “what’s in it for me” attitude.  You’ll need to be creative with rewards to teach them to want to comply with your requests. They have a huge drive for physical need.  Their energy level is high intensity and their potential for play is through the roof.  Get ready to meet your new exercise buddy! If you are looking to adopt a new puppy and have a lot of love to give, the Beagle is for you!
