Spotlight Breed American Leopard Hound

Spotlight Breed: American Leopard Hound

Welcome to our Spotlight Breed article of the week.  This is where we feature one of the most interesting dog breeds from around the globe.  We are excited to spotlight the American Leopard Hound this week!  This is a purebred dog whose ancestors came from Mexico by way of Spanish conquistadors who sailed to North America.  If we had to choose three words to describe this breed, they would be sociable, energetic, and intelligent.  However, there are many more interesting features to note!

The American Leopard Hound is a sweet and natural hunting dog that possesses high energy.  With, they do better in larger homes with big yards to run around in.  They are always in need of physical and mental stimulation, so we do not recommend a new dog owner to take ownership.  Overall, they are a friendly breed.  They can form a strong bond with family (their pack), children, and other dogs.  They may be a little shy or aggressive around strangers at first, but good socialization training will help a great bit.

The breed is easy to train as well.  They can form an association between a prompt, an action, and a consequence very quickly.  The American Leopard Hound is intelligent, so they often possess a “what’s in it for me” attitude.  You will need to incorporate rewards into your training programs for the best results! Another thing about this breed is that they love to bark and howl.  They are extremely vocal and not afraid to tell you so!  They may be your next watchdog.  Who knows?

The American Leopard Hound loves to play, comes with high intensity, and can be very loveable.  We will leave you with our favorite quote about this amazing breed: “And then my soul saw you and it kind of went, “Oh there you are. I’ve been looking for you!”
