RV Camping with Your Dog
Camping is a fun activity for the entire family. Bringing your dog only will only make it better! Whether you are heading for a weekend in the woods or going on a state-to-state road trip, taking your dog along does not have to be stressful. You will just need to consider what your dog needs at home and find ways to deliver the same on the road. We are here to help you along the way!
It’s all about comfort! Some of us can ride for hours in an RV without needing to take a break. However, it is much different with our four-legged friends. You will need to take their normal potty schedule into consideration. It is important to determine if your dog will require a longer walk or a short pitstop. At the end of the day, you must do what is best to make them comfortable along the way. This will also involve allowing your dog to have their own special space in the RV. Pick a spot in the RV and consider it your dog’s exclusive domain. They will appreciate having their own space for relaxation!
Pack a doggy backpack and include items such as:
- Food and treats
- Food and water dishes
- Medications
- Toys
- Bedding
- Leash and car harness
It is important to choose a pet-friendly campground. Believe it or not, some campgrounds do not allow pets. Bummer! If campgrounds allow pets, chances are that they require the dogs to be fully leashed. Most of the time they are not allowed to roam free as this creates a liability issue. As always, it is important to make sure that your dogs are up to date on their vaccinations and vet exams to prevent health emergencies on the road. Be sure that your dog is treated for fleas and ticks year-round, especially before extended outdoor vacations such as this!
Finally, prepare for emergencies like extreme heat and storms. Know the ins and outs of your campground so that you know where your dog may venture off to if they get loose. Always ensure that they stay hydrated along the way. Most importantly, have fun! RV travel with your four-legged friend can create so many fun memories!
