Remedies for Upset Stomach in Dogs
There are a lot of things that can trigger an upset stomach in dogs. As we all know, dogs are curious like kids. They are always putting things in their mouths. This can cause bacterial imbalances within their digestive tract. Vomiting and diarrhea are signs that a dog’s body is trying to expel something that shouldn’t be in their system. There are other signs to look out for as well. A dog with an upset stomach may have a decreased or loss of appetite, fatigue, depression, or licking their lips or other objects.
It is important for you to monitor all of the symptoms that your dog is experiencing. Watching for signs of increased discomfort, vomiting, blood in their vomit or stool, or extreme weakness. These symptoms may be signs of something more serious. You may need to seek immediate veterinary care depending on the severity of the symptoms.
We would like to inform you of three different remedies for upset stomach in dogs. As always, consult with your veterinarian before administering any home remedies.
- Fasting – Your dog’s stomach may be trying hard to get rid of something. It can be helpful to stop putting more things into their stomach for 12-24 hours. If your vet recommends fasting, ask whether they would like you to start a bland diet after the fasting period is complete.
- Ice Cubes – Hydration is key. However, it may be a challenge to keep up hydration when your dog is experiencing vomiting or diarrhea. Plus, giving them too much water may make their stomach more upset. If your dog can keep down small quantities of ice cubes, you can gradually increase the amount and how often you are offering the water and ice.
- Canned Pumpkin – This is a favorite of many holistic veterinarians. The thing about canned pumpkin is that it has a low glycemic index, so it slowly absorbs, which helps with upset stomach and digestion. Just be sure to pick up 100% canned pumpkin and avoid the pumpkin pie mix (this is loaded with sugars).
We hope that our recommendations help when your dog is experiencing an upset stomach. To help your dog maintain a healthy gut, consider giving them a prebiotic and probiotic made specifically for dogs. This may help lessen or prevent issues in the future.
