Paw Language

Paw Language

To no surprise, dogs have a wide range of methods to communicate.  One of the most common means of communication, and one that is often overlooked, is the language that dogs speak with the movements of their paws.  You can tell a lot by the way dogs communicate with their paws and we are here to explain how!

It is playtime! If your dog is trying to incite you into playing with them, they will make their intentions clear!  They will use their body language to let you know.  Their paws will go into an open posture to try and invite you to interact with them.

That is mine! You will know if a dog wants something.  They will paw at your hand or the object in question.  This is a way for them to try and take ownership.

Pay attention to me! Dogs can use their paws to indicate that they are trying to get your attention.  This is like a human tapping another human to let you know that they are present!

Potty time!  Sometimes your dog needs to go outside to potty.  It is possible that they may use their paws to scratch on the door with an attempt to open it.

Dominance. Dogs can use their paws to show that they are dominant over a specific person or other dog(s).

There are many other ways in which dogs can use their paw language.  It is a way of life for them and pet owners must adapt accordingly!
