Keeping Your Dog Calm During Grooming Visits

It is common for dogs to get stressed while getting groomed.  This can cause so much anxiety for both the dog and parents.  There are many tips and tricks to help decrease stress and keep your dog calm while they are being groomed which will be displayed in this article.

The best thing that you can do is allow your dog to get familiar with the grooming facility.  Let them smell all the grooming tools that will be used during their visit.  Turn on the clippers and let them hear the noise that they will make.  Be sure to pack some treats!  Reward them for their good behavior so that they can create the good association with the grooming facility.

Soothing music will also allow your pup to stay calm during their visit.  Think about soothing genres like classic or jazz.  Even having lower lighting in the room will help keep them calm as well!  You should also think about taking your dog on a long walk or playing a game of fetch before their appointment at the groomers.  Sometimes it helps to groom a dog when they are tired.

Do not be afraid to take breaks during grooming.  This will help keep the dog from getting stressed.  On the other hand, do not be afraid to stop grooming when it becomes “too much”.  The last thing you want to do is stress your dog out while grooming.  If they are continually whining or growling at you, stopping for the day, and tackling the rest of the groom the next day is a better idea.  This is considered a stress-free move for everyone.

As you can see, there are several techniques to try to help your dog stay calm during their trip to the groomer.  Supplements may also be needed to keep them calm, and this is not a bad thing at all.  Please do not overdo it as it may cause your dog to panic and dread getting their haircut in the future.
