Keeping Fish Tanks Safe from Dogs

Keeping Fish Tanks Safe from Dogs

Fish tanks have been shown to reduce stress and tension in the body, which in turn lowers blood pressure and has a positive effect on mental health. However, those benefits are not in plentiful supply when your dog will not leave the fish tank alone. Being engaged in a constant battle between your stubborn but lovable furry companion and the fish tank that is supposed to soothe and relax you can be exhausting.  We are going to look at some tips which can help you keep your dog away from the fish tank!

First impressions are important, even between dogs and fish!  Be sure to use a leash to introduce your dog to the fish tank by placing high control on their enthusiasm.  By doing so, you will be able to stop them from jumping up onto the tank to peek inside and/or rushing towards it to knock it off its base.  Take note of the interaction between the dog and the fish.  Does the dog have normal signs of curiosity with their normal happy attitude?  This is a good sign!  Continue to watch them to see if they maintain the same behavior.  Do not leave the dog alone with the fish at this time.

The location of the fish tank will become one of the greatest barriers between the tank and your dog.  We recommend that you use a sturdy base for your fish tank and if necessary, add additional straps to secure it even further.  Be sure to store the fish food in an unreachable place as well.  Clean your fish tank at least once a week to remove the buildup of algae from the interior walls.

In conclusion, you shouldn’t have to worry about your dog and your fish tank but instead engage some of the above tips we’ve discussed today to set a boundary for your pets. Not only will this be easier on you as the owner, but it will also be easier on the pets as well. If your dog is constantly hovering around the fish tank and startling the fish, this could have negative repercussions when the fish become stressed and anxious.
