Believe it or not, there have been reports of dogs ingesting ice cubes and ending up in the emergency room. Dogs end up having “bloat,” which requires surgery to alleviate. Veterinarians assumed that the ingestion of ice cubes caused the dog’s bloat. Many people on the internet raised concerns and wanted to know more.

Bloat is a condition that happens when the stomach fills with gas and then rotates within the abdomen. This can occur when dogs drink too much water or eat larger portions of food after exercise. Gulping excess air can lead to bloating as well. It was discovered that the veterinarians were incorrect in the assumption that the ice cubes caused the bloat. On the flip side, ice cubes can adjust the rate and amount of water a dog takes in.

Ice cubes can help dogs recover from surgery by preventing them from drinking too much. Your dog will likely be just fine if given an ice cube. However, you must supervise accordingly to ensure they do not choke.
