How to Teach Your Dog How to Fetch
Many dogs are good at running after their favorite toy or ball. However, not all dogs will retrieve the toy and bring it back to you. This is where it can get tricky! Follow our step-by-step instructions below to learn how to teach a dog how to fetch.
Step 1: Grab the items! You will need a ball or toy and some training treats.
Step 2: Navigate to a small, enclosed space. Because your dog has nowhere else to go, it helps them focus on you and the task.
Step 3: It’s time to teach your dog to chase the ball. Many dogs are programmed to chase after a thrown object.
Step 4: Get your dog to return the object. Once your dog consistently chases after their ball or toy, you can move on to one of the trickier parts: getting your dog to bring the item back to you. Follow these steps:
- Throw the ball.
b. Call your dog back.
c. Reward your dog with treats and praise.
d. Repeat.
Step 5: Teach your dog the “drop it” command. By now, your dog should be able to return the object to you. Put your hand below their mouth with your palm facing up and say the command “drop it.” This step will take time and patience.
Always remember that patience and consistency go a long way! Teaching your dog to fetch is a fun game. Enjoy it!
