Dogs & Vegetables – Which Ones to Avoid!

It is important to know that some vegetables are safe for dogs to eat and some are not.  You can mix the vegetables in your dog’s food to add instant nutrition!  This will help them maintain their weight, help them stay full longer, and boost their immune system.  However, some vegetables contain chemicals that do not interact well with a dog’s system.  This article will outline some of these toxic vegetables to avoid.

  • Mushrooms – Some mushrooms can be toxic to dogs.  If a certain mushroom is toxic to humans, it will be toxic to dogs as well.  It is best to avoid feeding your dog mushrooms all together.
  • Asparagus – This can be difficult for your dog to digest and can cause gas, vomiting, or diarrhea.

  • Onions – All types of onions contain an alkaloid, N-propyl disulfide which is toxic to dogs.  You will also need to avoid other Allium species such as garlic and chives.
  • Brussel Sprouts – These are not toxic but may cause digestive issues in the form of gas and bloating.  On the other hand, they are good in small portions, especially for the dogs who have weight issues.
  • Avocados – Avocados contain persin5, which is a fungicidal toxin which can cause significant health issues in dogs, including death.

Many dogs enjoy a variety of foods in their diet.  Plus, it keeps things new and exciting!  Vegetables are a low-calorie option to help your dog stay on track to better health.  However, the vegetables mentioned above should be avoided.
