Flood Safety for Dogs 

Unfortunately, floods have been deemed among the most common disasters in the United States. Floods can develop slowly due to rain or snow or come without much warning. Floods can cause much damage. In addition, they can be frightening and life-threatening to our four-legged friends. We want to share some flood safety tips so that you can keep yourself and your dog safe during intense floods.

  1. In the event of a flood, ensure that your dog is inside and navigate to the highest floor of your home.
  1. Grab your dog’s vital information (vaccination records, vet’s contact information, microchip number) and seal them in a waterproof bag.
  1. If you are told to evacuate, take your dog with you. Household pets and service animals should be included in any emergency preparedness plan.
  1. Have a thorough understanding of the different flood alerts issued by the National Weather Service so that you can respond accordingly.
  1. Determine where you will take your dog if you have to evacuate quickly. You may contact the local Red Cross office to find a pet-friendly shelter, or you can consider a friend’s home or pet-friendly hotel.
  1. Make an emergency bag to take with you if you need to evacuate. Essentials such as bowls, extra leashes, dog ID information, medications, food, first aid items, and toys should be included.
