Fish Oil for Dogs A True Benefit!

Fish Oil for Dogs: A True Benefit!

To your surprise, fish oil is one of the best supplements to add to your dog’s diet!  Fish oil supports your dog’s heart health, promotes a very silky coat, reduces itchy skin and can help to relieve allergies and joint pain.  Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids which are essentially a “good” type of fat that helps your dog’s body and brain.  Like humans, dogs cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids on their own.

Omega-3 fish oil is primarily in cold-water fish, shellfish, plant and nut oils, and flaxseed.  Dogs need this type of oil in their diets for many reasons.  Omega-3 also helps balance out omega-6 fatty acids, commonly found in processed foods and grains.  It is common for your dog to end up with too much omega-6 and not enough omega-3 fatty acids. This is because dog food manufacturers use meat from corn-fed animals.  Their bodies need both in balance and the same is true for dogs.

Fish oil also helps dogs span their lifetimes.  DHA, a component in omega-3 fatty acid, aids in the proper brain and eye development of puppies.  It also helps with older dogs as it deals with canine cognitive dysfunction.  Research has also shown that omega-3 fatty acids can help to trat canine arthritis and chronic kidney disease.

Before choosing which type of fish oil to feed your dog, consider their breed, size, weight and overall health.  Speak with your Veterinarian first as well.
